This week, more schools extended their test-optional policies, two colleges raffled off free tuition to vaccinated students, Colgate announced a new aid policy, colleges asked the government to help bring back international students, and big news came out of Durham, NC.
In testing news, more states and state systems have extended their test-optional policies for the next few years, with some deciding to go test-optional permanently.
Vaccines are your ticket to…free tuition. Governor Andrew Cuomo of NY announced the first round of winners (there will be 50 in all) to receive free tuition and room and board for four years at a SUNY or CUNY school. Likewise, Purdue University is raffling off a year of free tuition to 10 lucky vaccinated students. They’re calling it, “The Golden Ticket.”
Thanks to the launch of the “Colgate Commitment: An Initiative in Access and Affordability” Colgate announced tuition will be free for families with an income of less than $80,000.
There was a 43% decrease in international students at US institutions last fall due to the pandemic. Colleges and universities are now lobbying the Biden Administration to ease travel restrictions and decrease visa processing time so international student enrollment can return to pre-pandemic levels.
Change is certainly in the air. Legendary Duke Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski announced he is retiring at the end of the 2021-2022 season. “Coach K” is the winningest coach in Division I men’s basketball history. He also coached the US National Team for 11 years. Will Coach K and the Blue Devils make it to the Final Four one last time? We’ll be watching!
