This Week in College Admissions – 9/5/25

Published on: September 5, 2025

This week in college admissions, international student enrollment remains consistent at Princeton and Columbia, a federal judge rules that Harvard’s funding should be reinstated, Northwestern’s president resigns, the University of Chicago takes cost-cutting measures, and the Big Ten universities collaborate on an advertisement defending higher education.

According to data on the incoming first-year classes at Princeton and Columbia, the number of international students has not changed significantly this year compared to previous years. Black student enrollment at both schools has decreased in the past two years, following the Supreme Court’s decision to end affirmative action in higher education.

A federal judge has ruled that the government violated Harvard’s First Amendment rights by freezing $2.2 billion in research funding. The decision opens the door for funding to be restored, though the White House plans to file an appeal.

The president of Northwestern University has stepped down, following a turbulent period involving clashes with the Trump administration, funding cuts, and layoffs. Michael Schill led Northwestern for three years, and faced heavy scrutiny from conservatives over campus protests and other issues.

The University of Chicago is trying to cut $100 million in expenses in response to two years of deficits and federal policy changes. Cost-cutting measures include eliminating 100 to 150 staff jobs and reviewing research spending. The university is also pausing admissions for 19 Ph.D. programs, almost all of them in the humanities.

The eighteen Big Ten universities have collaborated to create an advertisement defending higher education, which will air during college football games. The ad spotlights the ways the universities benefit their communities and their commitment to research. The Big Ten universities enroll a total of 817,000 students across the country.
