This Week in College Admissions – 06/03/2022

Published on: June 3, 2022

This week, a new app attempts to move Facebook out of the way, mask mandates return to college campuses, a partnership between Penn and HBCUs, and a new president for Amherst College.

As student interest in social media sites like Facebook declines, a new app called “Community” is trying to help admitted and enrolling first-year students develop relationships even before moving onto campus. Administrators can also join the conversations. So far, more than 400 institutions around the world are using the app.

As Covid numbers continue to rise, multiple campuses have reinstated mask mandates in the last week. UCLA, Penn State, and the University of Hawai’i system are among the schools to recently require masks to curb the spread of Covid.

The University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine announced a new partnership with five HBCUs in an effort to help increase student diversity in medicine.

Amherst College announced a new president this week. Michael A. Elliott will become the 20th president of Amherst College on August 1st. He is currently an English professor and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Emory University in Atlanta.
