This Week in College Admissions – 02/28/2025

Published on: February 28, 2025

This week in college admissions, Penn State announced campus closures, Stanford implemented a staff hiring freeze, plans advanced for the University of Chicago’s new Engineering and Science building, and a list of the nation’s top Fulbright Scholar producers was released.

Facing financial and demographic pressures, Penn State announced it will close some of its 19 commonwealth campuses in the coming years. Penn State enrollment has declined significantly over the last four years, with an average drop of 11.8% across the commonwealth, and some campuses seeing drops of nearly 30%.

Stanford implemented a freeze on staff hiring, amidst growing concerns over the University’s 2025-26 budget. This move comes as Stanford also announced it is backing out of plans to purchase a Bay-area campus, which was optioned by the University almost four years ago.

Plans advanced for the University of Chicago’s new Engineering and Science Building. The new construction on the University’s Hyde Park campus will be UChicago’s world-class center for engineering research and teaching. The facility is set to be completed in 2028.

The Chronicle of Higher Education released a ranking of colleges and universities who produced the highest number of 2024-25 Fulbright Scholars. Oberlin College topped the list with 19 Fulbright Scholars, while Pomona, Barnard, and Amherst tied for second with 16.
