This week, swimming records at the Ivy League Championships, more test-optional extensions, exciting tech news at Bowdoin College, updates from the Common Application, and a band to make the University of Washington proud.
The University of Pennsylvania’s Lia Thomas won the 100-yard freestyle in the Ivy League Swimming and Diving Championship. Thomas is a transgender woman, and this is her third title this season.
In testing news, Northeastern and Northwestern both extended their test-optional policies. Northeastern remains test-optional through fall 2026 and Northwestern through fall 2023.
Bowdoin students were happy to learn this week that all students will be receiving a MacBook Pro, iPad Mini, and an Apple Pencil this fall. The plan is part of an effort to create “digital equity across campus.” Future students will also be receiving the latest Apple technology.
The Common App released its latest report on application trends for the 2021-22 admissions cycle, and the data revealed some interesting trends. So far, the number of applications is up 9% over last year’s total, which was already up 10% over the previous year. And the number of students submitting test scores is slightly higher than last year (48% vs. 44%), but much lower than pre-pandemic levels (76%).
