This Week in College Admissions – 7/31/26

Published on: July 31, 2026

This week in college admissions, American universities across the Middle East will resume in-person classes for the fall, Howard University disenrolls over 500 students, over 30 of Harvard’s peer institutions have come to its defense in court, and UC Berkeley becomes the most selective UC school.

American universities with campuses across the Middle East have announced plans to resume in-person classes this fall, despite being deemed military targets in March amid the continuing US-Iran war. The universities closed their campuses and moved to online classes last spring; however, they will resume normal operations this fall with plans to pivot if necessary.

At Howard University, over 500 incoming freshmen were suddenly dropped from enrollment after missing a payment deadline. Some students reported that they missed the deadline due to processing delays from scholarships and federal financial aid. Howard began reviewing such cases and has since reinstated over 200 students. Disenrolled students who live in New York can seek expedited late admissions review at CUNY and SUNY schools.

Following Harvard’s 2025 lawsuit against the Trump administration, over 30 peer institutions recently joined together to defend Harvard by filing a joint amicus brief. They argue that federal funding for university research is a public good that must be protected, and that there will be dire consequences if the federal funding system collapses.

UC Berkeley offered admission to 10.5% of its applicant pool for fall 2026, making it the most selective UC school and reclaiming that title from UCLA, which had an admit rate of 10.8%.
