This week in college admissions, Penn State proposed closing seven campuses, Harvard pledged millions of its own funds to support research, a new survey revealed many Americans hold a negative view of Ivy League schools, and higher education associations publicly called on President Trump to end his attack on higher ed.
Penn State officials proposed closing seven commonwealth campuses, citing declining enrollment and financial deficits. Trustees have yet to vote on the proposal, which recommends the closures occur at the end of the 2026-27 academic year.
Harvard pledged $250 million of its own funds to support research affected by federal budget cuts. This move came after the Trump administration froze an additional $450 million in grants to the university this week. Harvard is currently fighting the grant cuts in federal court.
A new survey by the University of Chicago Project on Security and Threats found that a significant portion of Americans hold a negative opinion about Ivy League schools. The survey also found that 45 percent of respondents view campus antisemitism as a “serious” or “very serious” issue.
Dozens of higher education associations publicly called on President Trump to restore the “historic compact” between American universities and the federal government. The one-page statement, sent Wednesday, is the latest sign of growing public opposition to the GOP’s attack on higher ed.
