This Week in College Admissions – 4/24/26

Published on: April 24, 2026

This week in college admissions, Forbes releases its “New Ivies” list, computer science falls in popularity, a judge approves a landmark Title IX settlement, and students turn to TikTok for scholarship information.

Forbes has released its third annual “New Ivies” list of public and private institutions that compare to or outpace Ivy League schools in the eyes of employers. They surveyed almost 400 executives and managers to develop the list. Public universities on the list include Georgia Tech, Purdue, and UT Austin, while private “New Ivies” include Carnegie Mellon, Emory, and Georgetown.

Computer science has fallen in popularity as a college major recently, after growing steadily between 2008 and 2024. Faculty members blame AI and the automation of coding for some of the decline. Many students are turning instead to engineering, or to distinct but related fields like robotics and cybersecurity.

A judge has approved a settlement to pay former female athletes at San Diego State University $300,000 in damages following Title IX violations. The settlement marks the first time that a school will pay damages to women athletes for depriving them of equal athletic financial aid, and is expected to open the door for lawsuits against other institutions.

According to a new report, many high school and college students are searching TikTok for information about college scholarships, and finding new scholarships through the platform. However, misinformation is common, and about a third of students reported encountering misleading scholarship-related content.
