This week, enrollment hit a record at Indiana University, Harvard released its demographic data for the class of 2028, FAFSA completion rates show significant progress after last year’s botched rollout, and a bipartisan anti-hazing bill passed out of committee.
Enrollment is up by nearly 2% at Indiana University campuses across the state. In addition to representing every state in the nation and 166 countries, IU’s matriculating students include a record number of underrepresented students of color– an overall increase of 7.4% from last year.
Harvard became the fourth Ivy League institution to release its class of 2028 demographic data in the wake of the Supreme Court’s affirmative action ban. While the Asian-American student population remained unchanged, Harvard’s Black student population dropped by 4%.
The number of students who filled out the FAFSA is now only 2.5% behind last year’s cycle. This constitutes significant progress from earlier this spring, when the completion rate lagged by over 30% due to the federal form’s botched rollout.
After years of failed attempts to pass federal anti-hazing legislation, lawmakers voted this week to advance the bipartisan Stop Campus Hazing Act. This is the first time a bill aimed at preventing hazing in higher education has passed out of committee, and advocates are hopeful that the bill will become law.
