This week, Brown brings back standardized testing, Penn and Boston College remain test-optional, Yale opposes a ban on legacy admissions, UVA and the University of Maryland suspend Greek life, the Education Department places more colleges under investigation, and Dartmouth men’s basketball votes to unionize.
Brown University has announced a return to required standardized testing. Starting with the next application cycle, students applying to the Class of 2029 must submit SAT or ACT scores. Brown has also confirmed that its Early Decision option will remain unchanged, as will its current practice of allowing consideration of legacy in the admissions process.
The University of Pennsylvania will remain test-optional for the 2024-25 application cycle. Applicants for the Class of 2029 will not be required to submit SAT or ACT test scores for admissions consideration.
Also retaining its test-optional policy, Boston College has announced that applicants in 2024-2025 are not required to submit standardized test scores. However, BC has found evidence that test scores, in context, can predict academic success; students who take the SAT or ACT are encouraged to submit their results.
Yale College is opposing Connecticut’s attempt to ban legacy preference in admissions. Yale’s Dean of Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid, Jeremiah Quinlan, formally testified against the state bill in committee hearings.
All Greek life-related social and recruitment activities at the University of Virginia have been suspended for three weeks in light of an alleged hazing incident.
The University of Maryland has also suspended most fraternities and sororities on its campus, citing allegations of unsafe conduct. Social and recruitment events are suspended while an investigation is underway.
The Education Department has added more colleges to its list of institutions under investigation for civil rights violations. The list now includes the University of California at Berkeley, Middlebury College, and Swarthmore College.
The men’s basketball team at Dartmouth College has voted to unionize, seeking recognition of employment for college athletes. The college has requested a formal review of the election and its results.
