This week, students in North Carolina demand stricter Covid policies, the University of Maryland disenrolled students, Stanford recommends masks outdoors and says no to parties, and college freshmen remain overwhelmingly optimistic about their future.
Students at UNC Chapel Hill are frustrated by the university’s Covid policies and are demanding more stringent measures, including a vaccine mandate, as Covid cases rise on campus. Students don’t want a repeat of last year, when they had to move home a few days after the academic year started.
Meanwhile, the University of Maryland disenrolled 79 students after they failed to meet Covid vaccine compliance requirements and Stanford University is “strongly recommending” outdoor mask-wearing when physical distancing cannot be maintained. Stanford is also prohibiting indoor parties until at least October. The updated Covid policies come as students are back on campus for the fall semester and there has been an increase in the number of Covid cases on campus.
Despite all this, a new NBC poll shows 92% of college freshmen feel optimistic about their personal lives and future job prospects, though they’re less sure about the direction of the United States and the world as a whole.
