It’s been another busy week in college admissions. Here’s the weekly round-up: There were more test-optional announcements, from large state universities like the University of Texas-Austin to private universities like Emory and Syracuse (Emory will now also superscore the ACT). A statement from Syracuse’s Dean of Admissions underscores that test-optional doesn’t mean test-blind: “It’s important that we continue to evaluate the best ways to assess a student’s readiness for the rigors of a university education,” says Harris. “But standardized test scores are just a piece of a much larger picture. They remain useful.” ACT added three new test dates, bringing the total number of fall test dates to eight. Georgia Tech won’t consider the main Common App essay and instead will focus exclusively on two short-answer essays for the 2020-2021 application cycle. Fall 2020 is coming into (somewhat) clearer focus. Plans run the gamut, from Bowdoin’s plan to only have first-years and transfers (and a few select others) on campus and forgo participation in fall athletics to Penn and the University of Michigan’s hybrid models.
