This week, a lot of interesting research to report, and a new COVID requirement is announced at Harvard.
The Chronicle of Higher Education is reporting that the number of new visas issued to Chinese students has dropped significantly from pre-pandemic levels. However, the total number of new visas was still up due to increased interest in studying in the U.S. among Indian students.
The Pew Research Center has found that Hispanic enrollment at four-year institutions has reached an all-time high. Between 2000 and 2020, the number of Latinos enrolled at four-year institutions jumped from 620,000 to 2.4 million—a 287% increase.
A report by Education Reform Now criticizes Early Decision admissions programs, claiming they provide an advantage to wealthy applicants in the admissions process. The report recommends three steps to help alleviate the issue: eliminate Early Decision at public institutions; schools that continue to offer Early Decision should meet the full financial need of all applicants; and provide better counseling on the benefits of Early Decision programs.
Harvard University announced that the bivalent COVID booster is now a requirement for any student who plans to be on campus from January onward, joining a small group of schools that are requiring the bivalent booster.
