This week, Columbia University appointed its next Provost, The Department of Education released its plan to recruit student testers for the 2025 FAFSA, New York Governor Kathy Hochul met with leaders from state colleges and universities to discuss preparations for potential fall protests, and an end-of-season Common App report shows an overall increase in first-year college applicants.
Columbia University has appointed Angela V. Olinto as its next Provost, effective April 1, 2024. Professor Olinto currently serves as the Dean of the Physical Sciences and the Albert A. Michelson Distinguished Service Professor in Astrophysics at the University of Chicago.
The Department of Education has released its plan to recruit the first student testers who will gain access to the 2025 FAFSA application. This announcement comes after the department said earlier this month that it would pilot a delayed release of the FAFSA next year, where the application will open to several hundred students starting October 1st, then slowly become available to all students in the following two months.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul met with leaders from over 200 state colleges and universities to discuss emergency preparations for potential protests as students return for the fall semester. Citing the increased need to monitor campus protests and potential threats to student safety, Governor Hochul included representatives from State Police as well as the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services in the discussion.
An end-of-season report released by the Common App shows the number of first-year college applicants in the 2023-24 season grew across the board. The total number of applicants increased from the 2022-23 season by 7 percent, and some of the most significant growth was in the number of students from historically underrepresented backgrounds.
