This Week in College Admissions – 06/07/2024

Published on: June 7, 2024

This week, Northeastern announces it will remain test-optional, Curry College commits to jobs for graduates, a survey of students who opt out of four-year college, the NCAA reaches an agreement on multiple-transfer athletes, Philadelphia’s University of the Arts closes its doors, and Brandeis rolls out major budget cuts.

Northeastern University will remain test-optional for the foreseeable future. The university started its test-optional admissions policy in 2020.

Curry College in Massachusetts has announced The Curry Commitment, a job guarantee program for full-time undergraduate students. Through resources such as internships, career counseling, and job search support, the program aims to guarantee either a job offer or admission to graduate studies for each Curry graduate, beginning with the class of 2027.

A survey by the Art & Science Group found that two percent of high school seniors who considered going to a four-year college later decided against attending due to political considerations. Twenty-six percent of those surveyed cited cost-related concerns as their main reason for not going to college.

The NCAA has reached an agreement with the coalition of states suing the organization over multiple-transfer athlete’s eligibility to play. According to the proposed settlement, student athletes will be immediately eligible to play no matter how many times they’ve transferred; those who were sidelined will receive an extra year of eligibility.

Philadelphia’s University of the Arts abruptly announced that it will close its doors on June 7th. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education withdrew the school’s accreditation on May 31st, citing UArt’s failure to “inform the commission of closure in a timely manner or to properly plan for closure with prior approval through substantive change.”

Facing financial pressure due to decreased enrollment, Brandeis University is the latest Northeast college to announce major budget cuts. The university will eliminate 60 positions this year, mostly in the staff and administration sectors.
