There’s a lot of news this week, so we’ll just get right to it!
Notre Dame announced that it has updated its fight song lyrics to include women. The change coincides with the 50th anniversary of the university’s admission of women to undergraduate programs.
Loyola University Chicago is the happy recipient of a $100 million gift from John and Kathy Schreiber. The gift will be used to fund full-tuition scholarships, room and board, and support services for underrepresented students. This is the largest individual gift in the university’s history.
The University of Michigan is launching a new robotics department, which is housed in the 134,000-square-foot Ford Motor Company Robotics Building on campus. Michigan is the first Top 10 engineering school to premier a robotics department.
Concourse is a new application platform that helps international students get into U.S. and international universities. Students create a single, anonymous portfolio of their grades, interests, and projects. Colleges then make offers of admission based on these portfolios. After a successful trial program with low-income students in Chicago, the company plans to expand to include U.S. students.
In college president news, Harvard’s President, Larry S. Bacow, announced he will step down in June 2023. Bacow’s presidency oversaw the university’s response to Covid-19, the announcement of a $100 million plan to atone for the university’s ties to slavery, and the years-long lawsuit over race in college admissions, which the U.S. Supreme Court has decided to hear.
A few states over, Penn State University welcomes a new president, Neeli Bendapudi. Bendapudi is the first female and first person of color to serve as president of the PSU system of over 97,000 students.
