This Week in College Admissions – 4/10/26

Published on: April 10, 2026

This week in college admissions, WashU adds an Early Action option and considers demonstrated interest, Hamilton launches new graduate study partnerships, Syracuse drops 84 majors, and the University of Wisconsin fires its president.

Washington University in St. Louis has added Early Action as a new option for applicants. This is in addition to the Early Decision I, Early Decision II, and Regular Decision options they currently offer. WashU will also go back to considering demonstrated interest, as shown by engaging with the university through a campus visit or online.

Hamilton College is partnering with several top universities to develop direct pathways from undergraduate to graduate study, whereby students can receive undergraduate admission to Hamilton and early assurance of admission to a graduate program. The current partnerships are with Penn (education), WashU (computer science and engineering), and UChicago (humanities and other programs), with additional partnerships to follow.

Syracuse University is dropping 84 majors, including degree programs in classics, painting, and some foreign languages. More than half of the closing programs had no students currently enrolled. Coursework or minors in many of the programs will still be available.

After refusing to resign, John O. Rothman, the president of the University of Wisconsin system, was fired by its Board of Regents, effective immediately. The vote was unanimous and no specific reason was given for the firing.
