This Week in College Admissions – 2/20/26

Published on: February 20, 2026

This week in college admissions, the Justice Department files a lawsuit against Harvard, Penn’s former president moves to Georgetown, UVA launches a career-readiness initiative, and projected salaries rise for college graduates.

The Justice Department has filed a new lawsuit against Harvard, arguing that the university is withholding information by refusing to hand over records about admitted students and applicants. The administration is investigating Harvard’s compliance with the recent Supreme Court decision banning the consideration of race in college admissions.

Liz Magill, the former president of the University of Pennsylvania, has been named the dean of Georgetown’s law school. Magill resigned from her position at Penn in 2023 following congressional hearings about antisemitism on campus. Prior to her role at Penn, Magill served as dean of Stanford Law School.

The University of Virginia is integrating career readiness into the college experience through the new Career Design and Discovery Initiative. The initiative is intended to help students connect their academic interests with work experiences such as internships and research opportunities, and is aimed at integrating career planning into the entire undergraduate experience.

Starting salaries are expected to rise for college graduates in almost every major for the class of 2026, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Computer science majors have the largest projected increase, as well as the highest projected starting salary at $81,535.
