The Common Application will be temporarily shutting down on July 23. At that time, all existing Common Application accounts and personal information will be erased. The Common Application will then re-open on August 1 for the 2014-2015 application cycle.
In anticipation of the shut-down, if you already have an account and plan to apply this year, be sure to save any information you need before the database is wiped clean! You’ll need to re-create your account on August 1 when the Common Application re-opens.
There are now over 500 colleges and universities that accept the Common Application. With so many schools to choose from, you’ll probably apply to at least one Common Application college this year. If you don’t already have an account, you might want to consider creating one in the next couple of weeks. You’ll be able to familiarize yourself with the application and make sure you have all of the demographic, educational, and personal information you need to complete the form. That way, when you create your official Common Application account for the 2014-2015 application cycle, you’ll be able to plug in the information you’ve already collected. You’ll be able to use the time you saved to edit and revise your essays instead of collecting demographic information. Just be sure to save the information in an external document before the shut-down on July 23!
For those of you who are interested in the Universal College Application, their application is already available for the 2014-2015 application cycle. An increasing number of colleges and universities are now accepting the Universal College Application, so you may want to view their member colleges and see if any of them are on your list.
Whether you’ll be applying to schools using the Common Application, Universal College Application, or both, you can use July productively to familiarize yourself with the application/s and collect the information you need to get off to a smooth start.
